I just watched the movie Oppenheimer. Of course, it tells the story from a Western perspective. It is, however, a powerful cinematic work. It addresses with the appropriate solemnity and gravity not only the historical events surrounding the American physicist but also the issue of man’s responsibility when dealing with scientific knowledge and technological tools that flow from it.
What does all of this have to do with Huawei? Recalling the current battle between the US and China for technological supremacy in the field of semiconductors, I couldn’t help but think of the same situation depicted in the movie in relation to the construction of the first nuclear bomb. The geopolitical implications of the current conflict are critical for global hegemony and are well illustrated in this video, which is unfortunately only available in Italian.
Purchasing a smartphone is a routine task that billions of people have performed throughout their lives. Although we are not contributing to the development of a weapon of mass destruction, however, we should be aware that today this trivial action is, for all intents and purposes, a geopolitical act.
